Protecting Sender Information with SMS Sender ID

When sending text messages, it is possible to protect an organization’s SMS Sender ID, i.e., the alphanumeric sender identifier (e.g., CompanyLtd), so that only the identifier’s owner can send messages with it to Finnish phone numbers.

SMS Sender ID Protection Process

Prerequisites for Sender Name Protection

1. First, consider whether your organization needs sender name protection. If you initiate sender name registration with Traficom, the process must be completed all the way to the operators. If the process is not completed, the sender name cannot be used for message sending after the protection takes effect.
2. The sender name to be protected must be a company’s trade name, auxiliary trade name, or parallel trade name registered in the Finnish Trade Register. A protected sender name can be 3–11 characters long, and the permitted characters are 0–9, a–z, A–Z, and the space character.

4. Public-law entities and associations may register a distinctive name or identifier as a sender name. In this case, Traficom recommends contacting them in advance by email: lyhytsanoma.numerot@traficom.fi

Sender Name Registration with Traficom

1. Sender name protection begins by applying for registration with Traficom: https://www.traficom.fi/fi/asioi-kanssamme/hae-sms-sender-id-tunnuksen-rekisterointia. An organization can submit the sender name (SMS Sender ID) registration application itself on Traficom’s website, or authorize a service provider to apply for registration.
2. Once Traficom has processed and approved the registration application, the company receives notification of the approved sender name. Valid SMS Sender IDs can be found at: https://traficom.fi/fi/rekisteroidyt-sms-sender-id-tunnukset.
3. When the registration application is approved, SMS Sender ID protection takes effect three calendar months after approval. Traficom charges the company €200/year for SMS Sender ID registration.

Implementing a Protected SMS Sender ID

1. Once sender name registration is approved, SMS Sender ID usage must be enabled in the necessary operator connections. The company must contact its messaging service providers. Arena Interactive serves as a service provider that enables the use of protected sender names.
2. Arena Interactive provides the company with the necessary powers of attorney to complete and sign. At the same time, information is conveyed about the confidential short message number beginning with 19 that you received from Traficom during registration.
3. We submit the powers of attorney and order forms related to protected sender name usage to the operators, after which we handle the opening and implementation of messaging connections concerning the SMS Sender ID with the operators.
4. We charge a one-time fee of €200 per protected identifier for implementing protection and opening operator connections.

SMS Sender ID Taking Effect

1. Protection takes effect three months from the date Traficom registered the identifier. If the protection date falls on a weekend or public holiday, the protection takes effect on the next business day.
2. After protection takes effect, messages with the protected sender name can only be sent through service providers you have authorized by power of attorney. You can still send messages with another sender name, but these are not protected unless protection has been implemented for that sender name.
3. If the protected sender name implementation process is not completed after registration, sending messages with the protected sender name will be completely blocked by the operators after 3 months.
